Music Business student lands marketing job at the O2 Academy Oxford

07 Dec 2017

Josh Barton, 2nd year BA (Hons) Music Business student at SAE Oxford, has just landed a job as the Marketing Assistant at the O2 Academy Oxford.

Already running two promotions companies, his own called PALADIN PROMOTIONS and the other he runs with other students at SAE called OXCORE, Josh has managed to build a name for himself and gain direct contacts in the industry, one of those being at the O2 Academy in Oxford.

It was through various meetings with the local booking agent working at O2, that Josh revealed his impressive industry skills and experience from running his company and studying the Music Business programme at SAE. Clearly making a very good impression, when the role of Marketing Assistant became vacant at the O2 Academy, Josh was contacted for an interview.

Amazingly, Josh was offered the job one hour after his interview and has been working there for a little while now. He has already received branding training and takes part in weekly marketing meetings in which he is expected to voice his opinion and ideas to help improve venues and the promotion of shows. His day-to-day duties include scheduling and posting on various social media platforms, which also involves updating the account banners, responding to messages and using tweetdeck. On top of this, he also maintains the venue, oversees the O2 street team and in-house photography, updates the venue print and assists in changing the readergram.

Josh believes that his experience studying at SAE Oxford has really shaped his path to industry employment:

“Studying a Music Business degree at SAE Institute Oxford helped me realise my true potential and gave me the confidence to take the jump and start a promotions company which then lead on to me gaining industry employment.”

Steve McCarthy (Music Business Lecturer) comments on Josh’s success:

“As tutor of Music Business, it’s always a privilege to watch Music Business students’ development and growth towards specific industry areas and specialisms. Josh is no exception to this having been working hard as a music promoter in establishing his own promotions company, putting on events in the Oxford area in addition to studying Music Business at SAE Institute Oxford. The combined experience of industry practice and music business study can only help individual growth and increase employment and careers options. In particular, this has presented Josh with great opportunities to expand and align his industry knowledge through the BA (Hons) Music Business Programme at SAE Oxford and through his work with the O2 Academy Oxford. Josh is an ambitious individual, keen musician and live music ambassador for Oxford and I look forward to watching his career progression.”

While in the near future Josh can look forward to repping shows that happen at the O2, he has already had involvement in other exciting tasks.

“Recently through having my role I was asked if I wanted to be a runner for a sold out show at the O2, which was a great experience for me. I was not solely working for the O2 but Live Nation as well.”
