Steve Stopps from Excalibur Games visited SAE Leamington Spa to host a workshop exploring the Agile working methodology with our gaming students.
Steve is an industry veteran with more than 15 years of project management experience in the gaming industry.
Through his guidance, students learned the principles and structure of working Agile through several activities, interspersed with theory and industry insight throughout the day.
Nathan Flannery, Games Programming and Game Design Lecturer, said: “Our students are undertaking a collaborative Creative Studio project, and so this hands-on experience using Scrum methodology proved invaluable in helping them organise their teams and manage their projects efficiently and effectively.”
“After some smaller activities, involving hundreds of ping pong balls being ‘processed’ in sprints by students in teams, the main event was the development of a beach resort using Lego. Students were tasked with identifying the priority of building tasks, organising them with story point estimates, taking work on in smaller Agile teams, and planning their sprint backlogs. Then in a series of short sprints lasting the afternoon they built, tested, and polished their Lego resort until it met the client’s needs; in this case Steve taking the role of product owner.”
“This activity taught the fundamentals of Agile, and notably the Scrum methodology, in a practical and engaging way that all students enjoyed. ”
‘This will set them up to now apply these principles and techniques in their own video game development projects.”
