Ted White on composing music and sound design for commerical advertisement and TV

On 4 November, SAE London will welcome Ted White to their campus for an SAE Extra masterclass, from 6.00 - 8.00pm. It will be a really useful session for students interested in composing music for moving picture, including advertisements and TV. 

Ted will give an overview of his way of writing for ads, and then will go through a brief right from the script to the final online film. Over the course of the talk he will address negotiating usage fees, the importance of demos, the role sound design has within the process, as well as of course producing the music. 

The session will be a great talk for anyone interested in how to get their foot in the door when it comes to big budget advertisements and TV, and understanding the music business and how to play the game. 

In the talk, Ted will emphasise the importance of practising your craft and developing your own unique sound. 

Giving a little teaser of what’s to come, Ted said: “Master your craft but allow time to diversify and grow. What I mean by this is that there are so many avenues within the music industry, and with budgets shrinking I feel it is essential to diversify one's skill-set to survive and flourish. You can now be the composer who writes music for adverts, TV, theatre as well as being an artist in your own right. You then have four revenue streams instead of one!” 

He added: “It sounds obvious but constantly be writing music; not only does this keep your chops fresh and up to scratch against your fellow composers who you are all fighting with to win the same brief, it also gives you a massive back catalogue of material that you can then dip into for future works or even use for library content! For example only this week I had a track get picked up for an advert that I wrote over 6 years ago and totally forgot I even had. In my eyes it was a dead track, but either way it was picked as it resonated the vision perfectly for this particular campaign. It just goes to show that what you may feel is not your best work or a dead track maybe the ideal sound for someone else!”

Starting his musical journey at an early age, Ted began playing in bands and with electronics aged 12. It wasn't long until he found his passion for electronic music and subsequently began DJing and producing Dance music. Hungry to get more out of electronic music, aged 18, Ted moved to New York with nothing more than a laptop and a keyboard.

Since then Ted has worked as a Music Producer and Media Composer out of several major studios around the world including, Studios 301 in Sydney, H.O.M.E Studios in Hamburg and Mission Sound in New York. 

His music can be heard on commercials for brands such as Nivea, Stella McCartney, Samsung, Battery Energy Drink among many others.
