Industry insight: SAE London Audio students spend a day at Vada Recording Studios

11 Jun 2018

SAE London Audio students Ashley Walker, Tim Magge and Marios Themistocleous recently had the opportunity to spend a day at Vada recording studios. Meeting Matt Terry, studio owner, engineer and producer, the students were given an insight into his experience, skills and were also given a bespoke tour of the studio.

Vada Studios is a well established location for recording music and has been around for over 20 years. Clients include Producers Adrian Bushby (Foo Fighters, Muse) and Gil Norton (You Me at Six, Malory Knox) and bands such as The Darkness and Bullet For My Valentine. SAE’s very own Music Business Programme Coordinator, Lee Erinmez is also currently recording and producing his band’s new album at the studio and arranged the students’ exciting visit.

Commenting on the experience, Ashley Walker said:

“Matt Terry gave us a detailed tour of the live room set up. He showed and explained to us all the mics and positioning. He explained through his years of experience and experimentation what he found works best. The drum kit set up was very interesting as he really didn't skimp on the mic usage. It was great to see that the techniques taught to us at SAE are still used by seasoned professionals.”

For the students, it was a fantastic chance to ask Matt questions about his experience and really get an understanding of how everything works and get tips on how to prepare for recording a band.

“In the control room Matt gave us a run through of his ssl g+ console (similar to the one at SAE London Bankstock) except his one was customized with red leather and extended with more channel strips. It was great to see how his many years of work in the industry had given him a clear vision of what sounds to use and how to get them.”

With Vada studios well-established, Matt has spent years collecting an array of equipment and gave the students a run through of all his outboard gear as well as showing them his effects processing chains. Seeing everything up-close and being able to speak to a true industry professional was an inspiration to the students and has been an invaluable experience that they can build upon as they continue with their degree.

Ashley commented:

“Overall the day was a great experience. The studio was amazing and it was situated in a beautiful house with acres of land. It was great meeting Matt and hopefully he can come to SAE to give a talk and share more of his experience.”
