Telling Stories Visually
Charlie Blackledge is a Content Creation Lecturer at SAE Institute Leeds. With a career rooted in photography, graphic design and film, Charlie specialises in visual storytelling that explores both creative expression and the world around us. Her work spans fashion, music, editorial and long-form social documentary, using imagery to communicate meaning, context and emotion.
Originally trained in analogue film techniques and fine art photography, Charlie later embraced digital workflows, developing a strong appreciation for the creative flexibility of tools such as Photoshop. This balance of traditional craft and modern practice shapes both her creative output and teaching approach.
Industry Experience
Charlie has worked extensively as a professional photographer, producing studio-based promotional imagery for bands and fashion projects, alongside location-based documentary photography focused on social issues. Her clients and collaborators have included Barfly music venues, known for launching bands such as Coldplay, Oasis and Franz Ferdinand, as well as organisations including the British Council, Scottish Centre for Design and Architecture and Scottish Screen.
Her practice reflects a belief that strong visual work is built on technical skill, curiosity and intent, with a clear understanding of context and audience.
Creative Philosophy
For Charlie, the strongest creative work emerges through collaboration, trust and respect. In the classroom, she encourages students to experiment, take risks and explore ideas that genuinely matter to them, creating an environment where confidence and originality can grow.
She places great value on the shared creative journey between tutor and learner and is continually inspired by the work students bring to life across photography, design and film.
Creator Profile
Favourite tool?
Canon 5D Mark IV and Photoshop! And a good pair of trainers; photography is both a visual & physical medium.
Biggest inspiration?
“The responsibility to document the times we live in. In an era of image oversaturation, post truth, we must share the right visual stories in a powerful innovative way.”
Fun fact?
Early on in Charlie’s career, Joe Strummer of The Clash gave her a £60 tip when she photographed him at Barfly. They had a great conversation about everything from the Russian revolution & the early catalysts of punk.
