SAE is excited to be hosting a virtual masterclass with Concept Artist and Art Director, Jason Pickthall, as part of induction week this September.
The online event will take place via Zoom from 1.00 - 2.30 pm on Friday 11 September, with a chance for the attendees to win a signed print of the bespoke artwork Jason will be breaking down in the session!
SAE Oxford Game Art Animation lecturer Aidan Coughlan said: “Jason is a very accomplished artist and it is a pleasure to have him to do a talk with us. He has created a bespoke piece of work for this talk in which he will be breaking down his entire process. For second-year students, this will be a great opportunity to see how a professional artist works before they dip their toes into the industry. For new students joining us in September, it will be an amazing insight to see how they could potentially use the tools afforded to them at SAE Oxford."
The free talk is open to students from across SAE’s four UK campuses in Oxford, London, Liverpool and Glasgow.
In the talk, Jason will explore what makes a good composition, covering the rule of thirds, background, mid ground and foreground elements. By demonstrating an original piece of environment art, Jason will start with thumbnail sketches by selecting the correct one and following it through to final key art production.
He will then focus on scale and creating a believable world with a compelling narrative. Techniques include rough sketching and using 3D software, proving that you don’t have to be a concept artist to design a compelling layout.
Jason said: “I want to show you how to unleash the creativity you never knew you had to create unique new worlds and realities. Using a multitude of techniques from rough concept sketching to 3D construction to bring your creations to life. I was once sat where you are! I know what it takes to get into the entertainment design industry and I’ll share my experience and know-how.”
"I WANT TO SHOW YOU HOW TO UNLEASH THE CREATIVITY YOU NEVER KNEW YOU HAD TO CREATE UNIQUE NEW WORLDS AND REALITIES."
