FAQs for Starting Film Production in January 2026

The January intake gives you the opportunity to begin the BA/BSc (Hons) Film Production degree in January instead of waiting for the September start, letting you begin sooner and graduate earlier.

The course is an accelerated 2-year programme. It provides the same qualification as a traditional 3-year degree, but saves you a full year of time, reduces your tuition fees and lowers your living costs. You will follow an intensive, practical schedule that reflects real industry workflows, meaning you can enter the film and TV sector ahead of students who choose the 3-year route.

You will learn the entire filmmaking process from idea to finished film, including storytelling, screenwriting, directing, cinematography, lighting, sound recording, editing, colour grading and post-production workflows. You will gain hands-on experience with professional cinema cameras, lighting kits and industry-standard editing and grading software.

You will also explore documentary practice, producing, scheduling, festival strategy and developing work for real audiences. Collaboration, communication and set behaviour are embedded throughout the course, preparing you for real production environments.

The degree is delivered in person at SAE London in Haggerston, with access to our industry-standard film production studios, camera and lighting equipment, dedicated edit suites and post-production facilities equipped with the software and tools used across the film, TV and digital content industries.

Your tutors are working industry professionals, including filmmakers, directors, editors, producers and cinematographers who bring current industry experience and insight directly into your learning.

You will also learn from guest speakers such as BAFTA-nominated filmmakers.

Graduates progress into roles such as cinematographer, camera trainee, editor, post-production assistant, colourist, 1st or 2nd Assistant Director, production assistant, documentary filmmaker, producer, sound recordist, post-production sound specialist and commercial content creator.

Many begin in junior roles and build experience rapidly through freelance and production work.

Yes, eligible UK students can apply for full student finance support for both the 2-year and 3-year versions of the degree.
