SAE was delighted to host UniJam for the third year and bring together talented gaming students from different institutions to collaborate on developing their own game.
Almost 50 students from the University of Westminster, Sheffield Hallam University, Goldsmiths, London College of Contemporary of Arts, University for the Creative Arts, LSBU and SAE made up three teams that took part.
UniJam gives students the chance to work together to create a game. The week teaches these participants about scoping, teamwork, innovation and creativity in gaming within a safe and constructive environment.
Running for a week-long duration at SAE London, SAE Leamington Spa, SAE Glasgow and the University for the Creative Arts in Surrey, the opening day included a welcome session, theme reveal, brainstorming, then a planning and scoping session.
The rest of the week was spent collaborating on the game’s production and development before a game showcase at the close.
Hamie Nouri, Games Design Lecturer and Games Programming Lecturer, said: “The benefit of UniJam is to bring students from all the other universities together, so they meet with talents that they usually don’t meet in their own classes. When they make a game together and eventually make friendships, it builds their network and gives them the opportunity to learn how to communicate with other disciplines. When the opportunity arises to attend other networking opportunities, they are much more familiar and experienced on how to handle themselves.”
“Other than the friends they make along the way, they also get the opportunity to experiment with tools and skills that they usually wouldn’t be able to in an education setting. As part of UniJam, our sponsors have also showered them with gifts too.”
A panel session of experts also discussed the latest gaming industry trends and topics including AI and how to launch a career in the current climate of the game industry.
Congratulations to the winning team who created the game, Cookie Dunker.
Big thank you to the UniJam sponsors including Steinberg, Krotos, Leartes Studios, IKmultimedia, Synty Studios, Blue Raincoat Music and rock band Skunk Anansie who sponsored the bags.
