SAE students support Paintballing Liverpool with video content

SAE Liverpool students gain valuable experience creating content for Paintballing Liverpool

SAE Liverpool students worked with Film Production Lecturer Carl Copeland to create video content for local business, Paintballing Liverpool.

The company wanted to market their services and collaborated closely with Carl and students on the project.

There were a number of SAE students and staff involved alongside Carl including Campus Support Technicians, Stephen Bell and Jacob Crossley.

Students including John Gilbert, Morgan Taylor, Gary Matthews, Harley Baxter and Paul Edwards assisted with camera duties while others worked on lighting, featured in the film and as gaffers. Additionally, prior to shooting, an initial location review was held where test shooting was carried out. This coincided with producer responsibilities such as completing calls sheets and risk assessments for the production.

John provided significant post-production support by completing a number of reels to support Paintballing Liverpool’s social media campaign.

He said: “Working with our Lecturer to plan, film, edit, and deliver a project to a high standard for a local business has helped me gain a fuller understanding of professional workflows, while also providing an opportunity to implement what I’ve learned at SAE in a real world environment.”

Carl said: “SAE often engages with local community initiatives as a way to provide students with real world project briefs, while doing something rewarding. This is a valuable experience for students as they are continually building their portfolio. It means they are in the mindset of working with a professional brief and engaging in the production process for short-form storytelling. They get insights from the SAE team while building material for their showreels and CVs. Importantly, it was a fun experience, which involved all of the student team getting actively involved with the paintball game itself which they appeared to enjoy.”

SAE student Paul Edwards said: “Being a part of the local paintball promo was a weird but fun experience, having started uni with the idea to be behind the camera, this gave me a bit of experience on how to direct talent (as I was talent) and it gave me a better understanding of behind-the-scenes work, also seeing how Carl directed and ran the shoot was really helpful.”
