Learning Storytelling Through Cinema
First year students from the Content Creation & Online Marketing and Film Production courses at SAE Institute Liverpool attended a special cinema screening today at Odeon Liverpool ONE to watch Hamlet as part of their studies in storytelling, film theory and screen analysis.
The visit gave students the opportunity to experience the film in a cinema environment while applying analytical frameworks explored in class. During the screening, students examined narrative structure, cinematography, editing, performance and visual symbolism while discussing how classic storytelling techniques influence modern content creation.
Students also enjoyed the traditional cinema experience, popcorn included, while engaging in discussion around how narrative devices used in classic texts continue to influence film, television and digital media today.
Experiencing Film in the Cinema Environment
Peter Lynch, Lecturer in Content Creation and Online Marketing at SAE Institute Liverpool, said:
“It’s important that students experience film in the place it was designed to be seen. Watching a film in the cinema allows them to fully appreciate the scale, sound design and pacing of a story. These experiences help students understand how storytelling techniques translate across different formats, from cinema to YouTube and social media.”
Developing Storytelling Skills for Digital Media
Students on the Content Creation & Online Marketing course are currently exploring storytelling strategies, audience engagement, brand communication and digital media production. By studying traditional narrative forms such as Shakespeare, students gain insight into the foundations of modern storytelling used across platforms including social media, online video and branded content.
Building Practical Filmmaking Skills
Meanwhile, Film Production students are developing practical filmmaking skills including cinematography, editing, directing and pre-production planning. Cinema screenings provide valuable opportunities to analyse professional work and connect theoretical knowledge with real-world filmmaking practice.
Carl Copeland, Film Lecturer at SAE Institute Liverpool, added:
“Cinema enriches student learning and broadens cultural access. Watching films together in a cinema encourages discussion, critical thinking and creative inspiration. It allows students to engage with film as both an art form and a shared cultural experience.”
