Joe Exler

Senior Sound Designer at Global
London

Bio

SAE London Audio Production alumnus Joe Exler has carved out an impressive career in radio programming and sound design, contributing to some of the most listened-to stations in the UK.

Since graduating in 2021, Joe has worked across BBC Pop Hub Radio and Global’s Capital Network, designing sonic branding heard by millions of listeners each week. His work spans major UK radio brands, including BBC Radio 1, 1XTRA, Radio 2, Radio 6 Music, BBC Asian Network, Capital, Capital XTRA, Capital Dance, Capital Anthems, and Capital Chill.

At the BBC, Joe served as Assistant Producer on the Station Sound Team, creating imaging across all BBC Pop Hub stations. A career highlight was working on the live Outside Broadcast for Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2022, bringing the energy of the live stage to radio audiences.

In 2022, Joe joined Global as a Sound Designer, contributing to the sonic identity of Capital’s nationwide stations. His creative impact extends to iconic live events including Capital’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium and Jingle Bell Ball at London’s O2 Arena, where he has produced on-stage sound design and backstage live broadcast content. Now a Senior Sound Designer, Joe leads key audio branding projects across the Capital Network.

Some of his career highlights include:

  • Designed sonic branding for multiple national BBC and Capital stations
  • Created on-stage sound design for Capital’s Summertime Ball and Jingle Bell Ball
  • Mixed live reveal intros for artists including Natasha Bedingfield, Craig David, and JLS
  • Progressed from BBC Assistant Producer to Senior Sound Designer at Global within three years

SAE equipped Joe with the core technical and creative foundations that shaped his path. The course developed his proficiency in Pro Tools, sound design techniques, and project organisation – skills that remain vital in his work today.

Joe credits SAE with nurturing his creative problem-solving and ability to manage complex projects with precision, which are qualities that have supported his growth within fast-paced broadcast environments.

Joe’s advice for future students is:

“Never be afraid to push your comfort zone to achieve what you want. Networking is incredibly important: a single conversation can open doors. Some of my biggest opportunities came from connecting with others in the industry, including fellow SAE alumni.”
