After being inspired by the BBC Live Lounge sessions SAE Institute’s Adam Lowe and James McCormick set out to re-create the phenomenon in the SAE Liverpool studios.
So it turns out that our students like nothing more than the challenge of an eleven hour day filming and recording the audio of local rising talent. No we’re not surprised by that fact, but we are impressed with the results…
Check out our session with local band Raised By Wolves here:
What prompted the sessions?
Adam Lowe and James McCormick, Campus Support at SAE Liverpool, said: "Both the film and audio students are equally talented but they can tend to become consumed by their studies in their separate genres. Our aim with the live lounge sessions was not only to open their eyes to the volume of other potential job roles within their skill-sets but more importantly to show them the value of collaboration."
Liverpool’s live lounge recording sessions are now a firm monthly occurrence. Each one sees students working solidly with a band between 8:30am and 7:30pm to record and film one song.
How are the bands sourced?
Adam said: "Liverpool is listed as one of only nine UNESCO cities in the world and to maintain that status they have to host over 130 music events every week creating a huge bank of talent to choose from."
How do you narrow it down?
"We tend to choose acts who have a core following on social media so that the student’s work will be visualised by a large market. We’re also looking for elements such as particularly tricky instruments within the bands to give the students a real challenge when they’re in the studio."
"Aside from enabling the students to practice and unleash their newly learnt skills in the studio it gives them a great taste for life in the industry. It’s built camaraderie in the halls of SAE as the students are now interacting and discussing potential ideas on a much higher level than before."
