SAE is looking forward to hosting a virtual SAE Extra masterclass with professional script writer Ian Pike on 20 January from 6.30 - 8.00 pm.

Ian has extensive experience writing for comedy, drama and animation and is also a published children’s author. He’s worked with producers, broadcasters, editors, directors as well as other writers so will have plenty of different tips, tricks and insights to share with attendees.
Some of his career highlights include six years on Hollyoaks, writing an original comedy drama for Armstrong and Miller, a sitcom for Angela Griffin and Stephen Graham, and the BBC 3 series The Fear. At the moment he can be found working on the current series of Have I Got News For You, with two original sitcoms in development.
In the masterclass next Wednesday, Ian will be sharing his 26 rules for writing, drawing on his years of experience in the film and television industry. The 26 tips cover a range of different elements of scriptwriting, from narrative structure and storytelling to plotting, writing characters, coming up with dialogue, beginning or finishing your script, working with themes, avoiding cliches, as well as the self-editing process.
It promises to be an instructive session for any budding writers, regardless of whether you’re writing for the screen or not. You’ll also be able to ask questions during the event, gleaning insights into how to land work as a script writer and sell your work – every script writer’s ultimate dream!
Ian recently delivered two similar online sessions at ticketed events in London for the Sutton Writers Group and The London Writer’s Café. One attendee said: “Thanks so much, the evening was a great success”, and another said: “That was brilliant, you’re such an engaging and passionate teacher, thank you so much.”
Ian has travelled the world talking about his work, recently visiting Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Kuala Lumpur, so SAE is looking forward to welcoming this industry veteran to come and speak to Film students about the scriptwriting process.
SAE London Digital Film Production Programme Coordinator Dino Jacovides said: “Engagement with industry professionals like Ian is just one of the ways that SAE is preparing students for success; this masterclass will be a great chance for students to streamline their scriptwriting workflows and get valuable insight into getting paid writing work.”
