SAE UK is excited to be hosting a virtual SAE Extra masterclass with the producer/director Winston Gallagher on Thursday 11 June, from 2.00 - 3.00 pm.
The event is hosted in collaboration with ScreenTalk Oxfordshire and will provide attendees with top tips and tricks for establishing a career in the television industry.
Producer/Director Winston Gallagher started his career as a production assistant on Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins before switching to pursue a career in factual television programmes. He has produced television for BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 3, Channel 5, Dave, the Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel, Sky 1 and ITV 4. Winston has worked on a wide range of productions, including Attenborough and the Giant Elephant (Second Unit Director), A League Of Their Own – European Road Trip (Producer), Travel Man (Producer/Director), Snackmasters (Self-Shooting Producer/Director) and The Gadget Show (Series Director).
Winston Gallagher said: “I'll be taking attendees through what a career path in factual television might look like, using my experiences to explain what is expected in each job role. I'll also give an overview of the process behind the making of TV shows from idea to delivery. Finally, I'll talk to the students about how to get a foot in the door of what is a very competitive industry and how to progress successfully once they have their first jobs.”
Given the ongoing situation with COVID-19, this talk will take place virtually, giving students from across the UK the chance to dial in and get some really useful career guidance. The event will be hosted securely on the Zoom platform and all registrants will be sent a link to join the event.
SAE Oxford Campus Director Richard Peirson said: “We’re excited to be giving students an opportunity to hear from Winston. Getting first-hand advice about how to land that all-important first job in the industry will be useful to students who are coming to the end of their studies at SAE, as well as students who have only recently joined us and are at the beginning of their creative careers.”
SAE Oxford is an official sponsor of ScreenTalk Oxfordshire, a leading network for screen professionals in the Oxfordshire area. As part of this ongoing sponsorship agreement, SAE students get access to a range of opportunities such as the chance to chat one-to-one with working professionals and to learn from industry guest speakers like Winston Gallagher.
Earlier this year, SAE students learned about the art of networking with filmmaker Carl Schoenfeld, and attended a ScreenTalk Oxfordshire session with the Academy Award-winning screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy.
SAE Oxford Digital Film Production lecturer Paddy Watremez said: “I’m sure this event with Winston will be another really useful session for our Digital Film Production students who are thinking about pursuing a career in the highly competitive television industry.”
