Taking care of the design of a videogame, either for a sizeable triple-A project or a small indie production means creating step by step a parallel world, coherent and believable even in its less realistic aspects.

In this masterclass, José will discuss the difficulties and stimuli in maintaining this level of cohesion between all the elements involved in what often is a long period of work, research, and design for video games. He will also talk about how limits and boundaries can be of great help in the process of building an entirely new visual world.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

With more than two decades of experience in the game industry, healing from Amsterdam but with southern origins, José is an engineer/game developer with an exciting journey.

From humble beginnings working as a web app engineer in Spain, José managed to redirect his career into the game industry in the early 2000s, joining Microsoft Game Studios in Ireland. He worked on a new console launch: Xbox360, several top production titles: MassEffect, Gears of War, Guitar Hero, Halo 3, mentioning just a few, and a project flop in the form of media entertainment device (Zune), fulfilling the roles of QA, product owner or Software Test Lead.

After some years, José decided to move to The Netherlands: TomTom, Telegraaf Media, and Subatomic were some of the companies he worked for before joining Guerrilla Games.

At Guerrilla, José worked on the release of Killzone 3 and Killzone Shadow Fall, helping shape the power of PS4, and worked on Horizon Zero Dawn, heading for PS5.

After some years on the corporate side, José and a long-time friend founded an indie studio in Amsterdam: Radical Graphics Studios.

Ever since, through Radical Graphics, José has been involved in the production of mobile games, gamification applications, Virtual Reality games, and lately, blockchain games.

Currently, he’s a game architect/developer working on-site for one of the fastest media entertainment companies in Europe, Azerion.

The Game Design in Hyper-Casual games with Philippe Grazina from the company TapNation.

With the mobile video game market growing rapidly today, these free (basic) games sometimes become more financially practical than other categories of video games.

Working as a game designer for these types of applications means understanding perfectly the marketing issues of a company.
