The Vienna U-Bahn Stars, a Success Story
Folliwng in the steps of other major cities such as London and New York, Vienna launched a pilot project a year ago which turned out to be a great success: Classic, rock, pop, folk, country and Austropop are performed in Vienna's subway stations very day between 3 PM and 10 PM. They entertain subway passengers with both vocals and musical instruments ranging from classical guitars to hangdrums. Since the project was launched, around 40 musicins from 14 different countries - including Austria, Italy, Ireland, Argentina, Australia and the USA - have performed over 6.500 concerts. The musicians have become part of the Vienna music scene with their performances in the subway stations at Westbahnhof, Karlsplatz, Praterstern, Stephensplatz, Schwedenplatz and Spittelau. This has given young musicians their first chance to perform before a live audience and others the chance to perform at clubs and other live venues.
From the Subway to the Livingroom
The U-Bahn Stars are generally well-liked by subway passengers and their fan base is growing daily. To make these talents even more accessible, the U-Bahn Stars have recorded a double album in cooperation with the SAE Institute in Vienna.
