BSc (Hons) in Audio Production

Please tell us about your background in Audio and what route you took to get where you are today.

I started off as a house music DJ when I was about 17, had numerous residencies and promoted various events in Essex and London. Highlights include playing at MoS, alongside house music legends Pete Heller and Terry Farley.

I learnt to make electronic music on EMP, then did a diploma in audio engineering, followed by my degree.

I freelanced for a year doing lots of dialogue editing and boom operating. I then did my Master’s degree and got pretty inspired with film sound and the aesthetics of film sound.

I became a supervisor at SAE London whilst finishing off my Master’s and then became a full-time lecturer

What excites you about passing on your knowledge and expertise to the next generation?

The level and depth students will go into on a project they are genuinely interested in. Part of the challenge is helping them identify that interest and then nurturing the proceeding process. Some of the work my major project students have done in film sound is on a whole other level, it blows my mind.

Which musicians/producers inspire you and why?

  • Cassetteboy, the most amazing audio editing and a real spearhead of Plunderphonics
  • Chris Watson, his recordings are amazing, but also his philosophy and appreciation of sound
  • Clint Mansell, for his beautiful yet simple scoring and his no nonsense, almost rebellious approach to scoring.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one album to keep you sane, what would it be?
