Please tell us about your background in Music Business and what route you took to get where you are today?

I’ve got a varied music industry career, which started as a professional musician, signing my first record/management deal in 1991 with BMG Records and Bernhard Rhodes, who famously managed The Clash. I’ve been the bassist for Snuff (That’s Enough) since 1996 and have toured the world as a performer and tour manager, taking in over 20 countries including: UK, Japan, USA, Australia, 
Canada and a lot of Europe. I worked for BBC Radio 1 as a Specialist Music Production Assistant 
between 2004 to 2009, working on shows with Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley, Annie Mac, The Punk and Rock Show, Giles Peterson, Fabio and Groove Rider and many more – even a couple of days with John Peel.

What excites you about passing on your knowledge and expertise to the next generation?

There were no courses like the one that I manage when I was younger, so I find it enjoyable and satisfying when passing on information and experiences that I’ve gained over the last 25 years.

Why should students choose SAE to further their careers in Music Business?

SAE employ a lot of people that are still working as active practitioners in the music industry. This is really important for students, as they need to be offered valuable and current industry knowledge and information. There are a lot of students across the various disciplines that offer music business students the opportunity to collaborate and work with and be able to share their skills and experience to deliver exciting projects.

What is the toughest part of running a music business?

Whichever area of the music business that you work in, it is vital that you don’t take your eye off the ball for a second. The industry is changing all of the time and you can’t get too comfortable. You might have a great business model one year, but it might be be working too well the next!

Which music events do you admire?

There are so many national and international music events every year, but SXSW and MIDEM are two that I would very much like to attend one year. The MMF and AIM in the UK put on some really valuable events.

Which musicians/producers inspire you and why?

I’m a bassist, so people such as Robert Trujillo, Jaco Pastorius, Flea and Les Clapool are my favourite bass players, but I do spend a lot of time watching drummers on Youtube. Matt Garstka and Tomas Haake are my favourite drummers.

What is the biggest ‘pinch me’ moment of your career?

When I worked at Radio 1, I interviewed Tony Iommi for about an hour, just me and him. The guy invented heavy metal! I also ended up on Ice T’s tour bus once ☺.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one album to keep you sane, what would it be?

At the moment, it would have to be the last Animals as Leaders album The Joy Of Motion.
